Supporting Local Talent: Newquay Boardriders Headed to the Usher Cup!

We’re thrilled to support the Newquay Boardriders as they prepare for an incredible journey to the prestigious Usher Cup at Snapper Rocks in Australia! This world-renowned event, taking place from 17th-19th January 2025, marks a historic moment for British surfing as it’s the first time an English club has been invited to compete. These surfers, many of whom are familiar faces in our waters, are ready to represent Newquay and showcase the talent and spirit of British surfing on a global stage.

The Usher Cup is more than just a competition; it’s a celebration of surf culture and a historic platform for emerging talent from across the globe. Founded to highlight the grassroots strength of boardriders clubs, the Usher Cup brings together top surfers to compete at one of surfing’s most iconic locations. Snapper Rocks, located on Australia’s Gold Coast, is legendary for its perfect right-hand waves and vibrant beach atmosphere, making it a dream venue for surfers worldwide. The inclusion of Newquay Boardriders in this event is a proud milestone for the club and British surfing, offering an incredible opportunity to stand shoulder to shoulder with some of the best surfers in the world.

Meet the Team

Lukas Skinner
A true prodigy, Lukas is not only the 2024 Boardmasters Champion, but also holds the titles of British Open and Junior Champion. With multiple achievements in European competitions, including European U16 Champion and Runner-Up in the U16 ISA World Juniors, Lukas embodies Newquay’s talent. Growing up in Cornwall, Lukas has been surrounded by a passionate surf family and brings a fierce dedication to each competition. His experience and drive make him an exciting force to watch at Snapper Rocks.

Jowan Pegg
At 21, Jowan has already spent three years as part of the English Junior team and has clinched impressive wins, including a victory at the 2024 Cold Water Classic. Known for his commitment to the sport and consistency in performance, Jowan has also placed highly in events like the Jesus Classic and other Newquay Boardriders contests. A familiar face to local surfers, Jowan’s passion and skill have grown in Newquay’s waves.

Fynn Gillespie
With an impressive background, Fynn has represented England in three ISA World Championships and two European Championships. A two-time winner of the Rip Curl Grom Search and champion at the 2023 NBR Memorial Weekend, Fynn is known for his agility and competitive spirit. His achievements reflect a dedication honed on Newquay's breaks, where he has become a respected competitor and role model for younger surfers.

Lauren Sandland
Lauren is an extraordinary talent with an impressive track record, including titles as the 2023 British Women’s Champion and 2024 Boardmasters Junior Champion. Representing England since the age of 13 at international events, Lauren recently competed in the 2024 ISA World Surfing Games in Puerto Rico, an Olympic qualifying event. Lauren's commitment to excellence and her connection to Newquay’s surf culture have solidified her as a leading figure in British surfing.

Fundraising Events

To support their journey, the Newquay Boardriders have set a fundraising target of £15,000 to cover flights, accommodation, and expenses for the team and their manager. We’re calling on the community to come together in support of these local surfers by attending some exciting events and contributing to their cause.

  • Saturday 30th November – Surf Competition
    An all-day surf competition with entry fees supporting the fundraiser. Divisions include Men’s, Women’s, and Over 40’s (£20 for NBR members, £25 for non-members). The day will end with an end-of-season party at Fistral Beach Bar, open to everyone from 6 pm onward. Don’t miss out on celebrating the season with us!
  • Sunday 22nd December - Miracle on Fore Street
    A community Christmas celebration where NBR will be stationed outside Northshore for the day. Join the fun as the town comes alive with festive events, with proceeds going towards our team’s journey to the Usher Cup.
